The Reader Revenue Manager integration in Site Kit allows users to connect their site with Reader Revenue Manager giving you the option to add newsletter signups, surveys, registration prompts, or one-time/monthly contribution requests.

Once the service has been connected, Site Kit will place the necessary code on your site.

Setup

To set up Reader Revenue Manager for your site, go to Site Kit > Settings > Connect More Services > Set up Reader Revenue Manager.

If you don’t already have a publication created for your site, you will need to create one. When clicking on the Create publication button, you will be directed to the Publisher Center, in order to create a new publication

After creating a publication, return to the Reader Revenue Manager setup flow in Site Kit. Click on the Complete setup button. 

If you have created a new publication, this will need to be reviewed by Google. This may take up to 2 weeks. You can continue to connect the Reader Revenue Manager module in Site Kit while your publication is being reviewed, but users won’t see any paywalls or CTAs until it has been approved.

If you already have one or more publications for your site, select the publication you’d like to connect.

Setup with multiple publications

If you select a publication that has not been fully set up, follow the link to complete your publication setup in Publisher Center. You have the option to finish the Reader Revenue Manager setup process without completing your publication setup. You can always complete the publication setup at a later time.

Settings

Reader Revenue Manager settings can be managed under
Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > Reader Revenue Manager.

  • Publication: This displays your currently selected publication and allows you to select others.
  • Default Product ID: This allows you to select your Default Product ID. You can select from “Open access” or any available product IDs. The first non-open-access product ID will be selected by default. Product IDs are used to label pricing plans and determine which content a reader can access based on their subscription or contribution. Learn more.
  • CTA Placement: The CTA Placement setting allows you to choose where you want the CTAs to appear on the front end of your website. The available options you can choose are:
    •  Specific content types: Allows the CTAs to appear on singular content that belongs to the content types you choose in the following setting.
    •  Specified pages: By default, prevents the CTAs from showing up in your site. When this option is chosen, the CTAs can only appear on individual content, configured via the WordPress post editor settings.
    • Site wide: Makes the CTAs appear across your entire site, including but not limited to singular content, archives, etc.

Select the content types where you want your CTAs to appear: This option allows you to select the content types where you want your CTAs to appear. These include Posts, Pages, Media and any custom created content types. This setting will only appear and take effect when you choose “Specific content types” for the “CTA Placement” setting.

If your publication requires further setup, you will see a notification explaining this in the Reader Revenue Manager settings with a link to complete the publication setup. 

WordPress block editor settings

When Reader Revenue Manager has been connected, you can decide how the feature works on individual pages or posts. To do so, open the page or post editor using the default WordPress editor and look for the Google Site Kit settings. You can choose from the following options:

  • Keep the default selection: This will use the default settings from the Reader Revenue Manager module within Site Kit.
  • Exclude from Reader Revenue Manager: This will prevent any Reader Revenue Manager configurations in Site Kit from displaying. 
  • Use “open access”: Surveys, paywalls and other prompts will be ignored when using open access.When using “Open access” in combination with a paywall, this specific post or page will not be behind the paywall and will be open to access. 

Note:  This feature is only available on WordPress version 5.8 and above.

Using the Reader Revenue Manager WordPress block

If the connected publication uses a contributions request or paywall CTA, you can also add inline Contribute with Google or Subscribe with Google CTAs via the WordPress block editor.

To use:

  1. Edit an existing post (Posts/Pages > All Posts/Pages > [Your Post/Page] > Edit) or create a new post (Posts/Pages > Add New Post/Page)
  2. Click on the Add block button and search for “Google”
  3. Select the block you want to place
  4. Publish your post/page to save the changes

Disconnecting Reader Revenue Manager

To disconnect the Reader Revenue Manager module, go to Site Kit > Settings > Connected Services > Reader Revenue Manager > Edit and select Disconnect Reader Revenue Manager from Site Kit. When choosing to disconnect the module, you will be presented with the following message.

Your Reader Revenue Manager account will remain active after disconnecting.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve set up Reader Revenue Manager, but the prompt is not appearing. Why not?

There are a number of reasons why Reader Revenue Manager prompts may not appear, including but not limited to the following:

  • Unsupported location: Reader Revenue Manager may not be available in your region. Supported regions.
  • Something blocking the script on the page.
  • Configuration. There may be individual page or post settings overwriting the overall feature settings within Site Kit. 
  • The prompt may have been dismissed.
